Tour of Poyang Lake 2014 - Stage 1

October 14, 2014
Stage one was a 85km curcuit race around the town of Pingxiang in nice warm weather but of course we still got dirty as the Chinese do like to water the roads.

With 3 hotdog turns, 6 ninety degree corners and a deviation past the Government House. The course proved to be harder than it looked in the race manual.

After a short neutral section the race was on from the flag drop. The attacks were continuous until the winning move went away about half way through the race. Team EHBS missed the move as Jake had just been brought back from a move and Sebastian and Amir were doing their best not to let the elastic band break from all the braking and accelerating from the technical course.
Eddy tried to get across in closing few laps but just didn't have the legs for it. The lack of this style of racing for almost a year was having its effect.

Poor old Samai had the crocodiles visit going in to the bell lap on the short rise past Government House and he lost contact with the bunch. As always Hekza came good towards the end and ended up crossing the line in 24th place. Eddy and Jake finished in the bunch with Sebastian and Amir loosing contact with the bunch once the elastic band broke in the last few laps.
The pace was such that the main bunch was dwindled down to about 70riders out of the 116 that started.

Leah did a fantastic job looking after the boys before and after the race, as well as organising everything in between.

On a side note is was great to catch up some old mates we haven't seen for a while. Mainly the big Russian Bear, Sergey. He rode for EHBS in our very first Poyang Lake Tour back in 2010 winning 3 stages and the overall for us. By the looks of him I am not sure he will be doing that this year.

We had a 70km transfer in the afternoon on totally blocked roads which always makes you real good. It was then time to clean the bikes and the clothes and get ready for tomorrow's stage.
