Tour of Poyang Lake 2014 - Stage 6Stage six was quite a different course from previous ones. We started with 3 laps of a 4.4km circuit followed some very nice country roads for some 35kms then back on the highway. On paper it was quite a lumpy stage, one that could have caused some damage.
It was a very festive atmosphere as we rolled out from the hotel to get to the start as we had some fireworks send us away.
As per usual the race started with a flurry of attacks quickly getting the average speed up to over 47km/h. Nothing was staying away on the small circuits so this meant that once we hit the country road and the small hills the race got even harder. Groups kept on sneaking off the front but were eventually brought back but the bunch. The word in the morning was that the RTS Team were leaving the race for the Tour of Hainan this afternoon, so they were on a mission to get big Boris one last stage win. Some promising moves were covered by Eddy just in case the impossible happened and break did succeed.
On the way back to town on the highway the speed just didn't slow down. We went through a few tunnels which was abit of fun. Thankfully there wasn't any wind to speak of so the big bunch moved along as one big unit.
Once off the highway it was time to head back into town for the finish. There were some tired bodies in the bunch today which made for some poor decision making by a few people. As a result there was a crash about a third of way down the bunch after someone clipped a wheel. The crash was quite a big one and there were broken wheels and some bikes. Apparently there were a few busted bodies as well. Which would have been true by the amount of limping people at lunch.
Unfortunately we had Samai, Hekza, Amir and Sebastian all involves. Sebastian lost some spokes in his front wheel. Amir blow out a tyre trying to stop in time. Samai managed to stop but was run into from behind and had his rear derailer ripped off. Heksa was the best to come of it. He has just borked by the crash as it spread across the road.
People continued to have crashes as we came into the finish as it was a very fast downhill. Eddy was the only one to finish in the bunch today missing all the carnage. Jake was held up and rolled in a few seconds off the back off the bunch.
We had another long, 250km, transfer after lunch. But at least it gives everyone a chance to relax and chill as we have plenty of room to spread out on our bus. Thanks to Leah who made sure of that.
