Tour of Poyang Lake 2014 - Stage 8

October 20, 2014
Stage Eight of the Poyang Lake Tour was 4 laps of a 26km circuit around Mount Longhu. We have raced this circuit in all previous editions of the race. But this time we the opposite way than we have in past.

After a rest day yesterday it would be interesting to see how everyone pulled up as people react differently after basically shutting down for a day after 7 days of hard racing.

It didn't stop the way the race started. Attacks from the word go. It is probably the hardest circuit for the tour with some good climbs for people to launch attacks. A group go away halfway through the first lap, with some top GC contenders in it. This put all the pressure on the leaders team to chase. They didn't really have any friends in the bunch and the leaders team slowly imploded.

This was the sign for another counter move to try its luck. Jake made this promising move which got to within 20 seconds of the front group at which point a few passengers became a lead weight to these guys. Andy Williams was also in this move and looking strong.

The Dutch took control of the bunch and caught Jake's group and continued to ride hard through the forested area of the circuit. This put about 40 guys in trouble and they would not see the bunch again.

For the EHBS team Samai got a puncture on the first lap, that was his race done. In fact there were so many punctured today that the neutral spare ran out of wheels. Sebastian, Amir and Jake were caught out in the cross fire of the Dutch team. This left Eddy and Hekza to look after each other and wait patiently in the hope that the field came together for a bunch sprint.

The break stayed away by 22 seconds which left Eddy and Hekza to try something in what a sprint for 14th. They worked well together and stayed out of trouble with Eddy finishing 19th and Hekza 21st.

We have another 200km transfer to look forward to this afternoon. But like I have said before with Leah controlling the bus we have plenty of room to spread out, relax and get some sleep. Also Candy Crush in high on entertainment for the guys.

Eddy's Garmin stats:

Average Speed: 44.7km/h
Maximum Speed: 77.6km/h
Total Ascent: 691m
