Almost but not quite for EHBS on Stage 3

December 19, 2011
Tour of Lombok/Sumbawa 2011 Stage 3

Stage 3 was 150km over mostly flat terrain with a couple of smaller hills just to keep the legs in check.

After a rough night for everyone, our main goal today was to get the yellow jersey back for Sam. Since he wasnít holding the yellow we had to attack to try and win the race. As a result we all followed a few early attackers and after only about 8kms a move got away with Eddy in it. This was perfect for the team as he was the highest placed rider in the break and since we have proved ourselves as being the only team that could bring breaks back it would have been hard for any other team to chase this break back again.

After 50km the break had got out to nearly 3mins, but this in when the day went pear shaped. Eddy punctured not once but twice on a gravel section of the road. After some really bad wheels changes from the spares vehicle, he finally got on his way but the next wheel didnít mesh with his chain and was jumping on every cog. By this point the bunch could see Eddy on the side of the road. Once receiving a wheel from the team car, he was back up and running, but now no longer in a promising position the not only win the stage but possibly win the tour.

So as result the team had to change its tactics. With the break now nearly 4mins up the road, we where in danger of losing our 2nd place on team classification. So with 60km to go Eddy and Peter got on the front of the bunch and set a high tempo to bring the break back to a more respectable time gap of under 2mins. So now we had to try and get Sam the 4secs needed to win the tour.

With the finish closing in Sam tried his hardest to rid himself of Alex Malone but Alex was up to the task and covered Samís every move. Will had been sitting pretty for most of the stage and was now looking good for the stage win in the sprint. But swinging around the last corner with 300m to go. The bunch was confronted with the VIP tents instead of the finishing banner. Apparently what had happened is that, whoever built the finishing area had put the finishing line and the VIP tents on the opposite side of the road that they should have been.

But all in all the EHBS Team had a fantastic Tour with Sam finishing 2nd overall. EHBS finishing 2nd overall on Team Classification. Two out three stage wins.

A big thank you to everyone involved, of course Sarah-Jeanne Fraser for her tireless work to only to get the team to Lombok but also once we where there. Puspita Muskita our Indonesian manager for his help behind the scenes. Of course the team itself, Eddy Hollands, Sam Smith, Will Heath, Peter Griffin and Damir Kolonic one of the best team performances we have scene so far.
