Tour of Qinghai Lake 2012 stage 2

July 1, 2012
Stage 2, 122km.

Today's stage started with 70 slightly downhill run before turning skywards for the next 30 odd kms, followed by an undulating 22km run to the finish line.

The first 70km was run at an average of 50km/h making it almost impossible to get away. But that didn't deter people from trying. Our objective for the day was to keep WU shengjun in the blue Asian leaders jersey. After the first sprint a Astana rider escaped with a Rusvelo rider, this ment that we had to chase and keep them a bay. So for the next 40km the team rode on the front slowly bring the break back. But as soon as the junction was made the attacks started heading up the long drag to the top of the KOM. We lost Heksa And LIU Jei early on, then Eddy was dropped some 30kms from the finish. Young Dylan found the going a bit to tough at the front trying to cover the moves and he fell back. But at least WU was safely tucked away in the bunch saving himself for the finish.
Unfortunately WU fell back to 3rd in the Asian classiment but still only 2sec down. So it wasn't a total loss. But as a result of all the work done by the team we had 4 riders finish in the last 5. But that is what team work is about. Even though some of the team management had trouble understanding that. There is normally one tool in these teams and we meet him tonight.
One thing was learnt today, it's easy to ride a 2HC tour but it is a different story racing a 2HC tour.
Ed's garmin stats. 122km, time 3hrs 00mins 33secs, average speed 41.1km/h, total ascent 986m.
