Tour of Qinghai Lake, 2012, Stage 4What a day it was today. We had everything from crosswinds, rain, cold and a mountain to cross. Being 148km in length it made for a very hard day.
The first 70km of today was held in crosswinds from the lake, there was the usual attempts to break away. Again nothing was aloud to much advantage. I think racing without radios makes the racing harder as its hard to tell earlier on who is up the road that might be dangerous to the overall classification. The race did split at a couple of points but after some slowing from the front group it was altogether at the base of the climb.
The climb was only 5km in length but with an average off 10% and the weather dropping to 9degress, rain and the altitude of 3800m. It wasn't long before the bunch was put under pressure. We had our 2 Chinese climbers in the front group. Eddy was in the 2 group over the top. Dylan had a bad day and found itself in the groupetto. Heksa was with Andrea Giadini over the top but the Italian got massive sticky bottle and this left poor Heksa along before one rider joined him for the last 60km home.
The two groups joined at the bottom of the decent, but again with very strong crosswinds it was not an easy run into the line. With 10km to go someone put the hammer down and split the bunch to bits again. Unfortunately the 3 of us were caught out and found ourselves in the back bunch. But like I have said before these real pros are a level about what we have raced for a long time.
We reached the finish line just a massive storm hit the town. I am sure if you are reading this you would have seen the photo of the finish line that has been posted on Facebook.
Thankfully everyone that finished today made the time cut so we can do it all again tomorrow .
Eddy's garmin stats, 148km, 3hr 35mins, average 41.1km/h, total ascent 827m.
