Tour of Qinghai Lake, 2012, Stage 13.Todays last stage was only a 78km circuit race, but gosh we raced it at an average of nearly 51km per hour.
As today was the last day for a lot of teams to show themselves it was a very start to the race. We had to cover 5 laps of a 15.6km circuit, we did the first 2 laps at an average of over 52km/h. But this still deter many guys from trying to attack but of course nothing was going to stay away at the speeds we were traveling at.
There seemed to be a lot of anger in the bunch today, especially the French team towards any Chinese riders. In fact at on point the chief commissarie had to drive up to these guys and tell them to stop all the fighting. It was quite amusing to everyone else watching all this it gave us something to talk about.
Coming into the last 3kms all the fun and games started again with all the sprinter teams trying to get their guy up the front and out of trouble. As per usual there was another crash with in the last 500m, this time it was UnitedCare rider from the USA that found himself sliding down the road. He went one way and his bike went the other but luckily everyone else missed him and his bike to cross the line and finish the tour.
A tour of which we had altitudes from 1225m to 3865m with an average altitude of 2392m. We had temperatures ranging from 8 degrees with rain to 35 degrees in the desert regions. Out of the 154 starters I think around 120 finished, the winner from TPT from Iran averaged nearly 45km/h for the 13stages covering 1859km. It will be a tour that stay in memory for a long time and about the only thing I can be proud of is that I was the oldest guy to start and the oldest guy to finish. Although the tan lines are looking really sharp now and very brown.
It's now time to relax have few beers at the closing ceremony and then start the trip back home. Looking forward too seeing you all again. It's been nearly 2months since I left perth it's about time I came home again.
Eddy's Gamin stats, 78km, 1hr 31mins, average speed 50.7km/h, total ascent 117m.
