Sam Smiths race report from State Masters Road Title, 12-8-2012WACF State Masters(30-45yrs) Pickering Brook road race REPORT.
This race was combined with A grade men's to be contested in wet conditions over a short distance of 70 km. Having a combined race worked in my favour as it made for a much faster and harder race especially with Rob Power absolutely smashing himself senseless on the front up every climb. Sure enough after only 3 laps the masters field was whittled down to just three: myself, Wayne Thomson and Gary Jones. I was feeling quite good and was able to go with the moves, on lap 4 another Rob Power initiated break looked to be going clear, I bridged across and it was the move that stuck. The break had Rob Power, myself, Brad Hall and Henry Morley.
On the last lap Rob Power got off the front with a well timed attack. I could have helped reel in the rampant Rob, but this would have only played into Brad's hands, we would have caught Rob and Brad would have milked us to the line and taken the win being by far the fastest sprinter. Instead I played the sit on the back and do nothing card while Henry and Brad worked together to slowly reel Rob in. Once the gap had been reduced enough I used my "freshness" to attack across the gap and worked with Rob all the way to the finish. I was stuck on the front for the uphill sprint but Rob had done so much work throughout the race he had nothing left in the tank, I got over the line and unleashed the first ever wheatgrass salute.
