Banyuwangi Tour De Ijen stage 2Stage 2, Banyuwangi Tour De Ijen
Oh my goodness, what a day! It was another hot day with a total of 147kms to be covered, and it started out very well for the EHBS team. We had Will and Damir in the break almost off the gun, with Will coming second in the first 2 sprint points giving him some valuable points in his chase for the green jersey. Damir did the job for Will in the breakaway which was very encouraging for his development as a bike rider and his overall awesomeness.
This left Eddy and Chris to look after Scotty for the coming big climb in the last 30kms of the stage.
It was the Hong Kong team who controlled the bunch all the way to the bottom of the climb, and from then on it was pretty much every man for himself, get to the top as best as possible. For Scotty if was his time to shine and he didn't disappoint (As far as we know he finished in the top 20 but will let you all know when we get the results).
We covered the first 111km to the bottom of the hill in 2hrs 40mins then it took the non-climbers over 2hrs to do the last 36kms to the top of the volcano. We climbed a total 2056m for the day and the most of that was on the last climb. In the last 15kms of the climb we had sections of about 28%, with the majority of the bunch being forced to unclip and walk for some sections of the climb.
Scott was in his element and he was a changed man after today. We have figured out all we need to do is let him loosen up a hill and he will start to enjoy life.
We have one stage to go tomorrow which is a 100km circuit which we will be doing our very best to finish off the tour with a bang.
