Banyuwangi Tour De Ijen, Stage 3Another hot day here in Banyuwangi with the temperature touching 40degrees. It was a 100km circuit race through the streets of Banyuwangi on a tight and twisty course.
Everyone had tired bodies and legs from the day before, so we just tried to warm ourselves up at the beginning of the race. As per usual on the Asian tour circuit, the attacks came thick and fast from the flag drop. However itt took about 15kms before the break finally established itself.
Despite some attempts by Will and Ed, EHBS did not have anyone in the move so we just sat back and waited to see what eventuated over the next few laps. Just after half way Damir and Eddy started to help in the chase, which caused the time gap to the bunch to immediately steady at 2mins, before slowly dropping in time. It was looking good for big Will as he was by far the fastest guy in bunch and looking comfortable.
Then with 2laps left the unfortunate occurred, and Will punctured. With a quick wheel change from Glasby (who gave up his wheel) and some epic pacing from Scott the big fella back on with a lap to go. Meanwhile Eddy and Damir had realised that the guys were not in the bunch and had switched off to wait for the guys to get back to the bunch.
After getting back Will found something for the bunch sprint, winning by at least 2 bike lengths (maximum speed of 68.9km/h) to finish in what we think is about 8th place.
Scott unfortunately didn't make it back to the bunch after helping Will chase back the bunch. Glasby rolled in by himself after giving up his day for the big fella. However it must be noted that Glasbys self-sacrifice secured himself the prestigious laterne rouge!
All in all a very good tour by the boys well supported by Puspita and Fenton. Now it time to let our hair down a bit, have few bintangs and talk about how awesome we are.
